What Is the Subclass 186 Visa?

The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) Visa – Subclass 186 allows Australian employers to nominate skilled foreign workers for permanent residency.

It has three visa streams:

  1. Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream
    For Subclass 482 (TSS) visa holders who have worked for their employer for at least 2 years

  2. Direct Entry (DE) Stream
    For individuals with qualifications and work experience who may not have worked in Australia before

  3. Labour Agreement Stream
    For applicants sponsored under a formal labour agreement between an employer and the Australian Government

Eligibility Criteria

General Requirements:

  • Must be nominated by an Australian employer

  • Must be under 45 years of age (exemptions apply)

  • Must have a relevant occupation on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)

  • Must have a positive skills assessment (for DE stream)

  • Must meet English language proficiency

  • Must satisfy health and character requirements

Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream:

  • Hold a Subclass 482 (TSS) visa

  • Have worked full-time for at least 2 years with the nominating employer

  • Employer must be an approved sponsor
