What Is the Subclass 189 Visa?

The Subclass 189 visa is a points-tested permanent visa for skilled workers who possess qualifications and experience in occupations listed on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL).

There are two streams under this visa:

  1. Points-Tested Stream – for overseas skilled workers with in-demand occupations.

  2. New Zealand Stream – for eligible New Zealand citizens living in Australia.

Eligibility Criteria (Points-Tested Stream)

To be eligible for the 189 visa, you must:

  • Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect and receive an invitation

  • Be under 45 years of age at the time of invitation

  • Have an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL)

  • Have a positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation

  • Score at least 65 points on the points test (age, English, qualifications, work experience, etc.)

  • Meet English language requirements (IELTS, PTE, etc.)

  • Meet health and character requirements

How the Points Test Works

Applicants are awarded points based on:

  • Age

  • English language proficiency

  • Skilled employment experience

  • Qualifications

  • Regional study, NAATI, professional year, etc.

Minimum requirement: 65 points, but invitations are issued to higher-ranking applicants due to competition.
